Broadband and moving house – plan ahead for a smooth transition
When you move house, you’ll want your broadband set up at your new address so you can access everything online you depend on. With the development of smart tech for the home, you may also need a wi-fi connection just so you can relax in front of the TV at the end of moving day.
In this blog, we look at what broadband options you can consider when you’re moving house, and pitfalls to avoid.
Plan ahead so you can always get online
There’s a lot to do when you move house – remember to write “broadband” near the top of the list! Getting it organised before you move in will mean you’re connected straightaway. However, it’s a good idea to build in some flexibility if you can, as house sales can fall through and moving dates can change.
Remember to ask whether broadband can be set up for you in advance, or if you need to wait until the previous residents have cancelled or moved their contract.
Can I take my broadband contract with me when I move house?
If you’re moving house before your wi-fi contract has finished, it might be possible to take it with you. However, it’s important to be aware that the price may change if you’re moving to a different area, as the price may be determined by how easy it is to access your provider’s network. Not all areas are covered by all providers, so do check and don’t make assumptions.
If your contract is about to run out, check that it can be transferred to your new address before you renew your agreement.
Remember, if you cannot transfer your contract to your new address, you may have to pay to be released from your contract early. With this in mind, it’s a good idea to start thinking about broadband, wi-fi and data options as soon as you know you’ll be moving house, in order to get the best deal.
Start a new contract at your new home
As broadband providers and prices vary between locations, starting a new contract might be your chance to pay less to get online. It’s always worth checking what discounts, promotions and subsidies are available in your new postcode area. You may feel loyalty towards your old broadband provider, but if they don’t offer the best deal in your new area, you’d be wise to start your new contract with a different company. Broadband comparison sites like this one may help you decide.
Coping without broadband after your move
It’s still possible to end up in your new house and find yourself having to wait a few days for an internet connection. If that happens to you, there are some short-term alternatives. At home, you could create a temporary hotspot using your phone data. This can be a great solution to keeping your smart tech working.
And if you usually work from home but can’t get online, Surrey libraries are free to join and offer free wi-fi to members (and you don’t have to buy coffee to justify your presence!). Office space providers usually offer a range of flexible options, so another alternative is to rent a desk there until your home office is fully functioning.
